Characteristics of Chianti Classico Gallo Nero DOC wineChianti Classico wine is the product of a blend of red grapes deriving from San Giovese and Cannaiolo Nero vines. Its characteristics include a brilliant clarity and a vivid ruby red color becoming garnet red with aging. Its smell has floral notes of violets along with a harmonious, dry and sapid flavor becoming soft and velvety in time. It must contain a minimal alcohol level of 12°. The wine can only be worthy of the label of "Chianti" if it passes examination by an official tasting commission. The "Tenuta di Monaciano" is located within the southern part of the historical borders of the Chianti Classico territory, near Siena, and remains an integral part of this territory unique the world over. It extends over 235 hectares (580 acres) of land and produces the wines: Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi along with extra virgin olive oil and cereal grains. It also produces Chianti Classico Riserva, a wine obtained by the aging of select grapes of the best vines and prime harvests for a minimum of 24 months in small oak barrels. It is then refined in bottles allowing it to develop its full bouquet and complex earthly flavor unique to Chianti.
