Dream in Chianti in Monaciano

Sognare nel chianti

Nature, time, labor and history have harmoniously forged the landscape and the historical places of the Monaciano estate.

The first historical records which speak of Monaciano date prior to the year 1000, and some buildings even today attest to ancient and recent wars, fires, pilgrimages of saints, abandoned and restored churches, as well as the patient and constant labor of man and his connection to this generous land.

In 998, the area that is now known as the borgo of Cellole was given by Bishop Lamberto to the monks of San Miniato in order to found a monastery and place of prayer (a church was later constructed and dedicated to San Martino).

It was visited several times by Saint Catherine of Siena Patron Saint of Europe during her pilgrimages to the Certosa di Pontignano, located at the entry of what was once called the Holy Valley.

The local farmers would bring the wooden Christ figure from the Church of San Martino (now housed in the pinacoteca of Siena) as a prayer for rain in times of drought. Nearby was the small Church dedicated to Saint Petronilla, successively transformed into a colonial country villa and is now the Piturniella farmhouse.

In 1500 Monaciano was the residence of Pietro Fortini, a member of the Accademia dei Rozzi and who documented life in Siena at the time in novellas and short stories in the style of Boccaccio and often erotic in tone.

In WWII, Monaciano’s agricultural offices and the Villa were used by the Allied forces as a base for the High Command of the Mediterranean. First housing the English Marshall Alexander and successively the American General Clark, both sojourned in the Villa with their respective officers while part of the troops resided in the barn stables and silos.
